The Letter A

A is for
Arachnophobia …. The fear of spiders.

We all suffer from one or more phobias. I actually have 3 major ones but the one that causes me the most distress is Arachnophobia better known as the fear of spiders. These 8 legged demonic things just sends me over the edge. I have always feared these things and even thinking about them sends shivers down my spine.

I remember a few years back after the building I worked in had undergone major renovations. It took a long time to complete but once it was finished the building was modernized and looked so much brighter and more welcoming. The office had also been moved and remodelled making it a wonderful place to be during my shift. Until one night…… a night I will never forget and it still makes me shudder with fear when I think about it.
I had arrived for my shift, hung up my sweater and tucked my purse under the desk. I booted up the computer, got all the books and binders I would need placed them on the desk and then left for the kitchen area to make a cup of tea before the patrons arrived. With a steaming mug of tea in hand I headed back to the office. I put the mug on the desk and turned on some music before sitting down. Well hells bells if I didn’t let out a scream that would wake the dead! There on the desk slowly creeping its way towards MY tea was this huge hairy arsed thing. I swear it was the biggest spider I had ever seen. It certainly didn’t take me long to exit the office with shivers of terror crawling up and down my skin.
As I tried to calm myself and figure out what the heck I was going to do a patron came into the building. He saw the sheer terror in my eyes and asked what was wrong. I told him what was crawling around on the top of the desk and with a few snickers he came to my rescue. He took the fly swatter off the hook and with a mighty whack he destroyed that damn thing and deposited it outside!!!

I have been bitten by a black widow twice. If that didn't get rid of my fear, nothing would have. Now, I quite like spiders.

I hate spiders. They're creepy and can be anywhere. Of course, Spiders and I have a compromise-if they're in my garden, I let them live.

I spent a week in the hospital after being bit by a spider in the desert near Las Vegas - I have a deep and abiding dislike for those 8 legged creatures!

Oh I hear you on spiders and you are definately not alone... I know they serve some purpose but they are still the creepiest creatures.

So, it's safe to say you'll never go see a "Spiderman" movie? That's okay, though, especially with the 3rd one. Because that one sucked.
'Big Girl Panties.' Come for the title-stay for the writing. Cool!

Poor spider... in saying that, I would have run away screaming like a baby if I saw one crawling towards my coffee!

Visiting from A-Z.

I write about phobias too, I can totally relate! Spiders don't scare me but other creepy crawlies do.

Yikes!

Found you through the A to Z Challenge. Spiders are the worst! I was a camp counselor for a few years and once one of the cabins became infested with, I kid you not, jumping poisonous spiders. JUMPING. POISONOUS. SPIDERS. It was like something out of a horror movie. I still shudder thinking about it...

generally I will leave spiders alone - unless they come into my house, then we have issues

YIKES! I don't dislike spiders, but I'm not exactly in love with them either. I give them their space especially as they kill the pesky mosquitoes but if one starts crawling towards me? It's him or me!

I don't think I was ever afraid of spiders, really, but for a while I felt like I was supposed to be, so I'd pretend. Don't get me wrong though, there are plenty of creepy-crawly things that really squick me out, I'm just lucky in that spiders don't fall into that category :)

I'm a snake phobia girl myself, but it seems like it's usually one or the other.

I'm with you on the spider fear. One time a massive spider climbed up the post of my canopy bed and threatened to cut me with his switchblade. Well, he didn't really have a switchblade, but he was really really big. His legs wrapped most of the way around the bedpost.

Spiders are bad. There is no grey area with regard to them. They're bad and should be smashed with heavy things.

(BTW, just seeing the pic of the spider totally creeped me out. Bad!)

I definitely share the spider fear to the point where I am refusing to read where you started in on a personal story. I'm pretty sure it will be something I didn't want to think about!

At least in your new employment, you won't have to worry about spiders or snakes lol. Snakes are one of my fears. However, I did pet a snake at Science North this winter. It took me 51 years to pet a snake, but I don't feel it necessary to do it again lol.

I hate spiders too...there are ginormous ones in Washington State that are impervious to Raid.

I have the opposite of arachnophobia. I've been an arachnophile for as long as I can remember, and still would love to have a tarantula someday. A spider used to live in the old package delivery slot in my family's old house, and I loved watching it creep around and sometimes spin victims and suck their blood. I also have a cute little wind-up stuffed spider on a keychain, whom I named Boris, after the famous Who song "Boris the Spider."
